| FOOD Crops will be cultivated in a below deck section. The entire plant will be used-fruit, kernels, stems, leaves and roots. The inedible parts will be used as mushroom substrate. Mushrooms supply protein and need no light. Some mushrooms will be genetically programmed to yeild various tastes. Algae like spirulina will be cultivated to supply protein. The chlorophyll will be extracted with ethanol and the dried alge will be mixed with flour. Soybeans will also be grown for soy milk and other foods like tofu. "Meat cells" will be cultivated in vats to satisfy passenger's omnivorous taste buds and supply protein without the trouble of dealing with livestock. Bacteria can be genetically programmed to yeild flavinoids and natural dyes. Genetically modified crops of the future will be far more productive than any alive today. CLOTHING People of the future will wear robes and sandals and not be afraid of nudity. If this is too simple for fashionable types it will be possible to make all sorts of clothing in addition to clothing brought along with the help of nano-textile mills and android taylors who can create finely woven garments of all sorts. Many women prize their furs (probably synthetic) and "feathers." While men such as myself don't care for such vanities, we cannot deny the ladies their pleasures. If there are formal events aboard the star ship, men might need some fine Italian suits and the women might need evening gowns. Perhaps the nano-textile mills and android taylors can make hundreds of suits and dresses from the same material recycled over and over again during long voyages. Old clothing will be shredded and the fibers respun to make new cloth, or even broken down into constituent elements and brand new synthetic fibers made in chemical labs then all new clothes woven. Passengers will have their own custom fitted spacesuits also. TOILETRIES Soap will be made from vegetable oils and lye. Flower essences will be used for fragrances. Old bottles will have value. Bidets may be used instead of toilet paper. Perhaps bottles and such containing toiletries of all sorts will just be broken down into chemicals and reformed so that a variety of containers can be made. Some people (women) just have to have different perfumes, soaps and shampoos to try. Face it, a man doesn't need much more than a loin cloth and a spear, but women have to have all kinds of things. If they weren't so pretty we wouldn't spend so much money on them. And why do we really reproduce? I don't care about having a baby and most guys don't, but girls will be girls and they all want a baby. If that could be genetically engineered out of a woman's nature they probably would turn into men. PAPER Most data will be stored in electronic media. Rare paper will come from hemp and be cautiously recycled. WASTES Human wastes will be burned in super critical water oxidizers. The CO2, H2O, nitrates and other mineral salts will be used for hydroponic solution. Some CO2 and hydrogen from H2O electrolysis will be combined with sabatier reactors in labs to make organic chemicals for medicines and other products. Everything will be recycled. |
| BUILDING STAR SHIPS C,H,O,N,S,Cl and Fl will come from the atmospheres of Venus, Titan and Uranus. Silicon and other metals will come from moons and asteroids. Large metal forms in tubular and spherical shapes will be bolted together. Carbon nanotube sheets will be laid on the forms and bound with some kind of adhesive matrix. They will then be moved into gigantic autoclaves powered by solar energy. Microwaves will heat and melt the sheets that will then cool and solidify into the desired shapes. The metal forms will be removed plate by plate from the inside out if necessary. The ships will be fitted inside with graphite, C60 and plastic bulkheads, decks, etc. The ships will be strong and light weight. It will be possible to build many ships in this way. |
